Making commerce easier to swallow

Selling isn’t my strong suit, creativity is. 

I’m much better at getting heard than getting paid. 


However, asking people for money is fundamental to the success of any enterprise. Artists who don’t sell, suffer. And so, I try to use creativity to trick myself into selling. To kill two stones with one bird, as the saying goes. 


Here’s how my process works. Anytime I create something new, from a documentary to an article to a software program to the latest book to a live recording of a presentation, I always ask myself a few leverage questions to bridge the making and monetizing. 


Here’s the first one. 


Whom have I served in the past, that has money, that needs to see this new thing I just made? 


This question is a time machine. It helps me recall past clients that I may have forgotten about over the years, and gives me a valid reason to follow up with them with value. 


Here’s the second one. 


Whom would I love to serve in the future, that has money, that needs to see this new thing I just made? 


This question is a crystal ball. It challenges me to give my artistic voice new outlets that were previously unavailable, and allows me to activate a new market segment. 


By asking myself these questions, and then acting upon them in a proactive, value forward manner, I reconcile selling in my mind. I make the dreaded commerce component of art easier to swallow. And most importantly, I earn money.
