It's 6:00 AM here in Columbus. I'm delivering the closing keynote at the Ohio Workforce
411 Conference in about 6 hours.
Couldn't sleep last night. I was too excited about the article in the the Wall Street Journal by Jeffrey Zaslow called "First Impressions Get Faster."
I WAS going to share the link to the article in this blog post, but I couldn't view the online text unless I became a subscriber. Damn it.
So, thanks to the guy in room #1133 (sorry Mr. Shehzad, I'll return your stolen paper as soon as I finish this!) here's a few excerpts from the article
which can be found in the Thursday, Feb 16th, 2006 issue; page D4, Personal Journal Section:
"Sure, humans have always made snap judgments. But as our culture swirls faster and faster, first impressions are being indulged at hyper speed..."
"In St. Louis, Scott Ginsberg, 26 years old, is now testing theories about first impressions. For more than 5 years, every day, he has worn a nametag that says, 'HELLO, my name is Scott.' The former marketing student says the nametag allows people to develop a first impression of him in seconds. His goal is to appear friendly and more approachable, and to tap into those instincts of others. Women who mock or ignore him probably aren't right for him, he says. But those who engage in conversation about the nametag learn things about him that lead beyond first impressions."
"'I'll always wear the nametag. It's a lifelong experiment,' vows Mr. Ginsberg, who now gives lectures to corporations on 'approachability.' He's concerned that the first impression window keeps narrowing. 'It's like an asymptotic calculus equation. Will it eventually approach zero?'" The entire article is great. It's filled with other fascinating, cutting edge research on first impressions. Pick up a copy today and share it with everyone at your office!
Alright, I better get back to room #1133 before Mr. Shazhad wakes up and realizes that some guy wearing a nametag on his pajamas just stole...er,
borrowed his copy of the Wall Street Journal. Not a good first impression!
(If you want to see a scanned image of the entire article, click here) LET ME ASK YA THIS...
Is the first impression window narrowing as our culture accelerates?

I've made sure all the blind people in St. Louis will hear the article tonight at 5:00 PM. It is a great article! Congrats!!
Man Scott, you are one amazing dude! Way to go!
I agree with Phil, this is HUGE! Congrats!
You'll be a household name soon, I can tell. (And I don't just mean that people will name their kids Scott...)
Congrats to you Scott! An article in the Wall Street Journal.
That is awesome.
As for the window narrowing. I would say yes and no. Everyone still makes first impressions the second they see someone, even before they talk to that person. I do think that as our culture accelerates, the narrowness of what our first impression is narrows. People have become and are becoming more and more judgemental.
I imagine that being you is kind of fun and adventurous and all that crap. The fact that you wear a name tag and go around meeting people all the time... I admire that, yet I don't envy it at all. I really don't like people all that much, myself - I seem to feel a lot better when they're not around. Maybe I should try ecstasy, I hear that makes you like people. Or maybe a lobotomy. A lobotomy would probably make people more tolerable, but ecstasy would probably be easier to get. I'm not sure. Maybe I should take some ecstasy, get a lobotomy, and then wear a name tag. I could be like a friendly, drug-addicted zombie. I could stand in line at the grocery store, all happy and drooling, with my nametag, and I could flirt with the cashier, ask her what time she gets off work. Smooth. I don't know. Maybe I should just try to be friendlier, see how it goes from there. You know, baby steps. Maybe if I were friendlier, people would be friendlier to me, which would make me friendlier to them, etc, like a "friendliness perpetual motion device". Do the laws of thermodynamics apply to friendliness? I bet that if I were a cashier, and you got in my aisle with your ten-items-or-less, and I was checking out the lady in front of you, and I looked up and saw you standing there with your basket, your name tag, and that big "HEY THERE, BUDDY!" smile on your face, I'd be like 'oh jesus, here we go... just what I need: an "out-going" customer. Great.' I can't help it, it would just rub me the wrong way. Maybe I should just buy a jeep. I hear that jeep owners are really friendly. I could buy a jeep, get a lobotomy, take some ecstasy, and drive around with a novelty-sized name tag that said "Hello, I'm a lobotomized, jeep-owning zombie on ecstasy!". I wonder if that would work...
I think your lobotomy-ecstasy-jeep-nametag idea sounds like a lot of fun. Take pictures of your adventures and then I'll blog it!
Thanks for your feedback Uncle Phil!
Clean the air? It is possible. Clean water? It is possible too.
Clean energy? It is possible as well.
My idea is very difficult for understanding. It is not difficult for engineer - mechanic, who knows very good the Pascal's law and even-arm lever.

The conception of an energy is discreate one to the same as a imbecility. No one has seen the energy and no one has seen the imbecility. We are able to observe results of the energy and imbecility. At present we have got to few energy because we have got to much imbecility.
Thank you for your time and interest.
