About a year ago I read an article from USA Today that stated: "8 out of every 10 Americans want to write a book; but less that ONE will actually do it."
Sound about right?
Well, think about it: how many people (yourself included) have ever said, "I would love to write a book someday!" My guess is, a lot. And after being involved with the St. Louis Publishers Association for the past few years; as well as authoring a few books myself, allow me to explain why people think this way:
1) They don't think anyone will read their book
2) They don't know how to start writing their book
3) They don't have enough time to keep writing their book
3) They don't possess the discipline to finish their book
Due in part to these reasons, people end up NOT writing their books. Which is a shame, because I know there are some amazing books out there just waiting to be written and shared with the world. And speaking from experience, let me say this: there is no greater smell than that first copy off the printing press; no better sense of accomplishment than to hold your own book in your hand; and no funnier moment than reading through that book only to discover how many typo's you overlooked - yet NOT caring because that baby is DONE!!
Remember, you don't have to be great to get started; but you have to get started to be great. So hey, if you wanna write a book - do it. Now. The only person standing in your way is the author.
LET ME ASK YA THIS...
When you write your book, what will it be about?

I have a strange feeling this blog was directed at me... Maybe it's just deja vu. ;)
I'd write all about my life, all the random things that run through my head. It'd be a strange, yet interesting, read. (According to most I've told about my book.)
"Remember, you don't have to be great to get started; but you have to get started to be great." Great quote, Scott! Is that a Ginsberg original?
Honestly, I can't remember where it came from. Does that mean I can say it's mine, or do I just give it the typical "--Anonymous"?
That guy Anonymous had some great quotes. Almost as many as that other dude, Unknown. Prolific writers, those guys were.
Scott, have you peeking at my half written book? Those are 4 very good self eval checks and I will keep them and go over them ...ummm.. daily. Do you recommend eBook versus Print?
Yes Frank, I read minds.
No, not really. We must think alike.
Go with print becuase it's tangible and the best business card you'll ever own. And you can sell it for more than an ebook. Also, do the ebook anyway for a different medium. Possibly give away the first chapter or two as a test.
Good luck, can't wait to read it.
My book will be about people who work in offices and why we fight because I'll have a lot of experience with that by the time I write it. Oh, wait, it is! Because I already wrote it (and smelled it and hugged it). You are so right!
I'd write a book about the hellish but highly rewarding re-modeling of a house project that I'm nearing the end of after 9 months. If I had only started a blog when I started the project...
Great blog. I found it through the WOMMA e-mail newsletter.
Dear Scott, thanks for another super article, i just love this site, thanks for the hard work.
