I say this with nothing but respect and admiration and a little bit of awe and jealousy, too: Those are some of the ugliest sweaters ever to come off the knitting machine. The particularly bad ones appear to be of synthetic fibers - acrylamb as us Scots call it, not too endearingly.

re: making communication easy at a party - conversations starters, like the sweaters. It's difficult to be self-conscious when everyone else looks like an idiot, as well.
re: communication I'm going to say that it provides commonality among the guests. The only hurdle is their decision to participate in the theme and actually show up to the party in costume. One that has been crossed let the good times begin!
